I read an article in Guardian Unlimited online the other day. It caused me to stop and consider that perhaps time in the kitchen is time well spent. There is an epedemic of obesity in our country and we have to consider the root cause. I know it's more than simply tying on an apron and whipping up a meal for family & friends, but, why not take the time to do that and reclaim the art of the well-balanced, unhurried, wholesome, home-cooked meal? Something so simple, and yet, foundational in a country where preservatives and chemical flavorings are becoming as standard as apple pie. So, ladies and gents, the challenge today? Let's turn off that TV, grab some of those recipe books, chop up some fresh ingredients, and take a little extra time making a meal!
An excerpt from the article reads... "Not only has home cooking declined, but in many households these pre-assembled dishes are consumed individually, all over the house, when and where family members want. Food - once something that brought adults and children together around the kitchen table - is now yet another way to avoid family life...Today, cook books dominate the bestseller lists: most of them are destined to lie, unused, on kitchen shelves. Schools no longer teach cooking per se, just variants on subjects such as home technology, in which teachers explain to children how microwaves heat up food. Meanwhile, sales of ready meals continue to climb hand in hand with teenage obesity. It may be fanciful to lay the blame for this at the feet of the early feminists, but, without a doubt, our struggle to free women from the sheer drudgery of housework was a small link in the chain."
